INFORMATION
Specifically designed for competitive-calibre players and for recreational players looking to take that “next step”. This program is designed to complement the team environment and tactical instruction players receive with their regular minor hockey teams. Through a progressive development model, it challenges athletes to identify and improve on individual weaknesses while also building the key attributes and decision-making skills required to compete at the highest levels of the game. Competitive players and house league players will be completely separated on the ice.
Key focus areas of the program include:
1. Change of Direction, Edgework, & Transition Skating
- In a typical game, players rarely skate 200 feet in a straight line. Far more common — and crucial — is the ability to change direction quickly and accelerate in short, explosive 5–10-foot bursts. These quick movements are what win puck races, establish body position, and create opportunities for passes or shots.
2. Shooting in Motion, Deceptive Release, & Range of Shot Types
- Players are rarely given 3, 4, or 5 seconds to shoot uncontested from the middle of the slot. The most effective offensive players are those who can release the puck quickly — in motion, off either foot, and while changing angles — making them far more difficult for defenders and goalies to read and react to. Develop your ability to shoot in any situation!
3. Scanning and Awareness
- As the game continues to get faster and more skilled, the ability to scan the ice, recognize options, and make quick, smart decisions under pressure is more important than ever — often making the difference between a missed opportunity and a game-changing play. Players will develop their hockey intuition and overall ability to anticipate plays.
4. Attacking from the Perimeter to Middle Ice
- The majority of a hockey game takes place along the boards, where time and space are limited. In this program, players will learn how to make effective plays off the wall — creating space, sustaining possession, and generating more dangerous scoring opportunities for themselves and their teammates.
5. Off Puck Play
- Even the world’s best hockey players have the puck on their stick for less than three minutes per game — meaning over 90% of their impact comes from playing without it. Developing a strong understanding of support options and how to be effective off the puck is essential for success in real game situations.
The Competitive Stream of this program involves advanced drills which most players will find quite challenging, applications are subject to review to ensure suitability for the program. It is restricted to those only playing at the competitive level this upcoming 2026-2027 season.
Full program details will be provided to registered families one week prior to the start date of the program.
